Chapter 14

A wave of fear rolled over me, but I forced myself to believe that the police may have found the killer and the investigation was over. They came to tell me in person.

But the knot in the pit of my stomach refused to unravel. I felt the exact same way as the night Leola died.

“I’m coming,” I called out as I stumbled out of bed and straightened my outfit that was even more wrinkled. On my way to the door, I caught a glimpse of myself in the vanity mirror. The bun I’d put my hair into in the morning was lopsided. I looked like a total mess.

My heart raced as I pulled open my door to find two officers standing before me.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“Ma’am, I’m sorry to have to tell you, but there has been another death on the hotel premises.”

I swallowed hard. “Someone else was murdered?”

The two officers looked at each other. “No, not exactly. Right now, we believe it to be a suicide.”

“A suicide?” Blood pounded in my ears. “Who?”

“The groom, Drake Carson. He was found in his room this morning by one of your housekeeping staff. He had a needle in his arm.”

“He overdosed?” I asked, astounded.

Drake didn’t seem like the type to use drugs. Then again, if he wanted to kill himself, he didn’t need to be an experienced drug user. But who would choose to die by sticking drugs into their veins if they had never been an intravenous drug user? Why not just swallow a bunch of pills?

“We’re recovering the body now and will know more later. As of now, it certainly appears that he died by overdose,” the second officer told me.

“There she is,” an angry voice shouted from the hallway. “There’s the woman responsible for all of this.”

I spun around to see Robert Carson charging toward me, wagging his finger. The hatred in his eyes chilled my spine. Farther down the hall, Brenda sat on a cushioned bench speaking to a paramedic.

“What? Me?” I asked, shock washing over me.

“Didn’t I tell you?” Robert Carson growled. “Didn’t I tell you that my wife and I had nothing to do with this? You thought we killed Leola to protect our son, but what now? He certainly isn’t protected now.”

“Mr. Carson, I never said that you or your wife killed Leola,” I said calmly, though his rage had me shaken up.

“You didn’t have to. We knew what you were thinking. And now my son is dead, and someone in this place might be to blame. I told you before that you have a snake on your staff. Someone murdered my son. If you had been less focused on us and more focused on your own damn employees, it wouldn’t have happened.”

“Sir,” the officer cut in, “it’s unlikely that anyone killed your son.”

“You’re wrong. My son did not kill himself. He was upset about the death of his wife, but he wouldn’t leave me and his mother. He promised… He promised that he would always be here for us, no matter what happened.
